Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
