Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, you'll find a clamor for introducing additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything in 2014
- Another imaginative release missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
