The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
