Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the likelihood of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations at play, aside from the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
