Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
